Dr Cristina Conde, researcher of FRAV, appeared on July 21 on Antena 3 TV Night News to explain FRAV projects on face recognition and biometric passports developed at Madrid Barajas Airport.
Ángel Serrano, PhD, a member of FRAV, will give a Workshop on Arduino next June 28, during the so-called FesTICval 2012 which is being organized by the Higher Technical School of Computer Engineering (ETSII) of Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC). The activity is sponsored by the Vice-Rectorate of European Harmonization and the Social Council of the University, as well as by the Cooking Hacks shop, which has donated 2 Arduino-related presents which will be raffled among the attendants.
From June to November 2012 Dr Ernst Kussul and Dr Tetyana Baydyk will take a sabbatical with FRAV. Both are researchers of CCADET of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). They are experts in neural networks, pattern recognition, micromechanics and mechatronics.
Ángel Serrano, PhD, a member of FRAV, has given today a 3-hour workshop about face biometrics at the Secondary Learning Institute Federico García Lorca of Las Matas (Las Rozas, Madrid) . The attendants were a group of eleven 16-18-year-old students who participate in the Educative Enrichment Program for students with high capacities, within the western area of the Madrid Region. This Educative Enrichment program is carried out with the support of the Education Council of the Madrid Region, the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science and the CEIM Foundation.
The workshop given by Dr Serrano is titled "Implementation of a webcam-based face biometrics system" and has consisted in the development, implementation and setup of an automatic face recognition and verification system. The process followed has begun with the acquisition of a face database with webcams, the later preprocessing and cropping of the acquired images, the use of dimensionality reduction algorithms by means of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the training of classifiers like Support Vector Machines (SVM) and the final computation of the optimal decision threshold for the minimization of verification errors.
From FRAV we would like to thank the invitation to give the workshop to Yolanda Toledano, coordinator of the program, and the teachers Esperanza Torrés and Mª Magdalena Hernán.
PhD Enrique Cabello, principal investigator of FRAV, has been invited to open the first International Conference of Applied Computer Science devoted to emergent technologies, which has been held from 25 to 27 April 2012 at hotel Hacienda Prom of Veracruz (Mexico) and which has been organized by the Higher Technological Institute of Misantla (Mexico). This is an educative and research centre created in 1994, which is part of the National System of Technological Institutes of Mexico and which offers higher degrees in the engineering area.
Moreover Dr Cabello has given an invited talk about computer vision and has prepared a 1-hour applied workshop to practise the concepts explained in his talk.
