Ernst Kussul was born in May 1938. He obtained the Master's Degree in mechanics by the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, Russia. He worked at the Machine Factory of Bryansk, Russia, from 1961 to 1965. He obtained his PhD in mathematical logic and programming by the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Since 1967 he worked at the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences as a junior researcher, since 1976 as a middle researcher and since 1982 as a senior researcher. In 1982 he received a PhD (D. Sci.) in neural networks by the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. In 1992 he was invited to Japan as a coordinator of an international group to build the B-512 neurocomputer. Between 1988 and 1998 he was head of the neural networks department at the UNESCO/IIP International Research and Training Centre of Information Technologies and Systems. In 1998 he begins working at CCADET (the former CI) of UNAM, Mexico, as a researcher type "C", and until 2007 he is head of the Micromechanics and Mechatronics Laboratory of CCADET. That year he became the coordinator the Neurocomputation Group of the Information Technology Department.

Dr Kussul has published around 150 scientific works, he is author and co-author of 3 books, as well as author of 11 patents and 2 copyrights. He has participated in international projects from INTAS, ISF, NSF-CONACYT. His works have been presented worldwide: England, France, Belgium, Slovakia, Japan, and in particular, in 1996 the United States National Science Foundation invited him to MEMS Laboratories. Dr Kussul was awarded in 1997 by the Ukrainian Government the Science and Technology Prize. He is also a member of the Mexican Technology Academy and he has been chosen as a member of the program committee of several IJCNN conferences.

Dr Kussul chose the FRAV research group of Universidad Rey Juan Carlos to take a sabbatical from June to November 2012.

Neural networks, pattern recognition, micromechanics and mechatronics.
